As a trained exercise professional I have always seen the benefits of exercise whether it be for health, well being and mental well being or to change your body shape. So when I got my stoma I knew this would always still be a part of my life but in what way I wasn’t sure. What I didn’t know at the beginning of my journey was that I could still exercise and do all the things I did before.
I think it’s a worry for all of us at the beginning of our journeys but I’m living proof you can still exercise and it will be beneficial for you and your health and well being.
What I have found, is a lot of people new to the stoma community are afraid to exercise as there is increased risk of hernia and dehydration but this shouldn’t be a factor that stops you exercising, with the correct guidance you will be safe to exercise so please be assured and as they say, you may not want to do it but you will never regret a workout!
I would always recommend starting with your basic post surgery core exercises which you should be provided with in leaflet from from your stoma team. If you haven’t received this ask your stoma nurses and I also provide guidance on these exercises on my own page.
Make sure to wear supportive underwear, leggings or support belt just to support your core area especially at the beginning of your journey. And keep up with your hydration before after and throughout.
The benefits of exercise are endless and your reasons for exercising doesn’t have to match everyone else. Exercise is so individual in terms of type, frequency, intensity etc so my advice would be to choose something you enjoy and do that! Any movement is good movement and your body and mind will thank you for it.
