Living with a stoma isn’t something most people grow up expecting. It’s not exactly a common topic, and for a long time, I thought it was something I had to keep quiet about. But the truth is, talking openly about stoma life is one of the most powerful ways to break stigma!
I remember when I first got my stoma. It was overwhelming. The fear of the unknown, the anxiety about how people would react when I tell them. But what really helped me through it was seeing connecting with others who had one. Real people sharing real experiences, talking about the ups and downs that comes with a stoma.
That’s why raising awareness matters. Too many people still associate having a stoma with something “embarrassing.” The reality for me is my stoma was life-saving, life-changing, and for many, it gives us back the freedom we thought we’d lost.
One of the biggest barriers I faced early on was worrying about how people would react, relationships, friendships, even just wearing certain clothes. But the more I talked about it, the more I realised that most people aren’t judgmental; they’re just uninformed. And once they understand, it’s not a big deal. If anything, I’ve found that being open has strengthened my relationships rather than hurt them.
For those of us in the stoma community, these conversations also create a sense of belonging. Whether it’s sharing tips about the best supplies, laughing over an unexpected leak at the worst possible moment, or just knowing we’re not alone, this support makes a huge difference.
So let’s keep talking. Let’s share our experiences and push for more awareness. Because the more we talk, the less stigma there is!
